ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A lawsuit has now been filed against Walgreens after an Albuquerque mother says a pharmacist wouldn’t fill her teenage daughter’s prescription.

The mother says it happened at the Walgreens pharmacy on Coors and Montano. When the mom tried to pickup a drug used to prepare patients getting an IUD – a form of birth control – the pharmacist on duty denied her, citing personal reasons.

The ACLU of New Mexico and the Southwest Women’s Law Center have filed suit against the drug store chain saying as a business that serves the public, they are prohibited from discriminating against women related to their reproductive health needs.

They say the incident left the mother judged, disrespected and embarrassed.

  1. is this the only pharmacy in albuquerque? if she walked across the street would she not be in a rite aid? are there no nearby pharmacists that would be able to fill this rx?

when i hear about people who insist on having a particular pharmacy or a certain pharmacist fill their prescription after they have been turned away once, i wonder what that person’s motivation is. do you really just want to get your medicine or are you trying to make some other point. perhaps you disagree with the pharmacist’s religion or politics (neither topic is important to me). maybe you want to prove that your dick is bigger or show that you are more important than other people. i guess some folks just like to make a stink.

as long as the state licenses pharmacists, they are saying that they trust the pharmacist to make certain decisions. one of those decisions made by pharmacists is whether to dispense or not dispense a drug. a pharmacist in good standing with the state has the right to refuse to fill any prescription for any reason whether you like it or not. if a pharmacist refuses to dispense a drug then you, as a customer, have the absolute right to take your business somewhere else.

when you agree to give up your own rights, maybe then we can talk about forcing other people to give up theirs. until then, exercising your own freedom can be done without trampling on somebody else’s.

  2. Where is the ACLU for the chronic pain patient??? When is somebody going to get Klonody and PROP in line??
