From the article:

A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of Walgreen in a dispute with a pharmacist who was fired after firing his gun at thieves at a store in southwestern Michigan.

Jeremy Hoven had a permit to carry a weapon. But Walgreen fired him in 2011, saying his gun use violated company policy at a store in Benton Harbor.

In a 3-0 decision Monday, an appeals court says there are no protections for Hoven, even if it’s legal under Michigan law to possess the gun. The court notes that he was an at-will employee who could be dismissed.

Here is where things get REAL INTERESTING.. I blogged about this back in 2012 in the one post https://www.pharmaciststeve.com/?p=2412

the link within the post .. talking about WALGREENS and this incident… NO LONGER WORKS !

Here is a second post on my blog https://www.pharmaciststeve.com/?p=1027

When this first happened … and while the link is still active.. it is now about drug store robberies and WAGREENS is not mentioned in the story.

They say that once things are posted on the web.. they stay there FOREVER … maybe.. unless you are a major corporation that can use your advertising budget to influence to make things DISAPPEAR ?

BUT here is a WAGS’ quote from the story.. that I copied and including in my post.. which has NOT DISAPPEARED

We’ve made significant investments in security technology in recent years, including increasing the number of digital surveillance cameras at our stores,” the company said. “We continue to invest in state-of-the-art security measures and high-definition surveillance equipment and hope that the apprehension of robbery suspects in the Benton Harbor area will prevent future crimes.”

So it would seem.. that as corporate employees.. you are expected to be reliable…but.. in reality.. you are  very expendable … the corporation’s image/reputation is much more important and as the quote from the WAGS’ representative implies… if an employee or customer gets harmed during a robbery.. your loved ones can take great comfort that WAGS’, most likely, has a video of the robber as he/she harms or kills you..  Doesn’t that give you the warm fuzzies ?

When seconds count.. you can hopefully call someone with a gun – a cop – that is hopefully only minutes away

  1. Eventually the actions Walgreens takes will negatively impact their bottom line.

  2. Diane…did they get that on tape? Anyway, does anyone know if there has been backlash from the local customers. Krogers in Indy tried to fire a manager for shooting and killing a robber because he was going to kill a customer. Community backlash was HUGE. Koger ended up not firing him at least not at that time. Don’t know where he is now, if they waited til the the publicity died done. Ridiculous one cannot C&C in the workplace if legal in the state. Wonder what the rules are in TX?

  3. It is my opinion that Walgreens treats employees like the enemy. Hours are being cut in pharmacy, older workers are being displaced and the employees that dare speak up are retaliated against and lose their jobs.
The open door policy is just a distant memory. The 4 way test? Gone along with the rest of the values that made Walgreens the pharmacy America trusts.
    Trusted.
I am one of the many employees to lose my job because I did speak up. I was bullied by a much younger store manager who had a reputation for intimidating employees. I went through the correct avenues and was thrown under the bus by employee relations all the way up to corp.
My name is Diane Hartman and I attended January shareholders meeting and shared my story. The CEO Greg Wasson, assured me company has zero tolerance for retaliation and my situation would be addressed. It wasn’t.
I would not recommend Walgreens as a place to work . EVERYONE is expendable.
Jeremy, I’m so sorry you were treated like the “bad guy ” Shame on Walgreens.
