‘The Poison Squad’ tells the story of government chemist Dr. Harvey Wiley who, determined to banish these dangerous substances from dinner tables, took on the powerful food manufacturers and their allies.
I stumbled on to this PBS show and Dr Wiley’s crusade to get the establishment of the FDA. His story starts in the late 19th century and this documentary shows how BIG CORPORATIONS had many/most of Congress in their pocket and Congress resisted taking correcting action against those corporations who was using all sorts of “bad preservatives” in food and even gets to dealing with the “Caffeine addiction” from Coca Cola products.
Take away is that Congress has not changed much over the 19th-20th-21st centuries … lobbyists and $$$ rule the day !

Well said, Steve! TOO many queens, knights, and bishops, in this chess game that is wiping out all of us pawns.The “decision” on the subject of milligram dosage limitation as I understand it, was made by a very few people, the “experts” on the subject…..behind closed doors. Congress has NOT addressed the “fallout” of the 2016 CDC “guideline” for opioid prescribing physicians. It seems the “experts”….know best how to manage some 20 million patients’ pain issues. This is a lot of people…..being ignored. Back burner. The “opioid crisis”. and the “guideline” is causing DISASTROUS results. It is reported that the death/overdose rate has fell with the implementation of the “guideline” and maximum dosage…..for one and all but, at what cost? NOTHING to substitute opiate MEDICATION that has been documented as being, effective, non abused, diverted, or misused in ANY way for MILLIONS of pain management patients however, this fact is being…..totally ignored. For me, personally, it does not matter what type compound of MEDICATION is offered for the millions of patients now suffering with insufficient dosages of MEDICATION, opiate/opioids documented as effective in a sufficient dosage but, to simply force a maximum dosage for one and all, is insane. I’m sorry to “harp” about opioid MEDICATION but, NOTHING is “offered” for an effective therapy for pain management. “Kratom”, CBD products are not effective for one and all. Some patients do not wish to use marijuana. I fully believe that MJ IS effective but, it is still “illegal” to use as per dot/gov. I never would have believed 4 or 5 years ago that the “experts” would begin to push rationing, MEDICATION in an ineffective dosage for one and all, without a “plan” to help those of us living somewhat of a nightmare.. Already. a great many people….patients have tied the knot at the end of our ropes and we are just “hanging on”.
