Here is a article from MARKET WATCH….
About Express ScriptsExpress Scripts, Inc., one of the largest pharmacy benefit management companies in North America, is leading the way toward creating better health and value for patients through Consumerology®, the advanced application of the behavioral sciences to healthcare. This approach is helping millions of patients realize greater healthcare outcomes and lowering cost by assisting in influencing their behavior.
In this author’s opinion… ESI is going down the path of trying to change the healthcare of workman’s comp patients via behavioral modification. Is this going to take the form of a carrot and stick or chair and a whip? This initial program is -according to the article – dealing with opiates and pain management.
Since there is no way to “measure” a person’s pain intensity.. it is subjective.. since a patient’s pain intensive is a personal perception.. it could be said that a person’s pain is “all in the head”…
Since it is routinely stated that MAYBE 25% of chronic pain patients get adequate pain management.. if – according to the article – ESI is going to REALIZE GREATER HEALTHCARE OUTCOMES… one must presume BETTER PAIN MANAGEMENT… so how does one take a population that the vast majority is grossly under treated and cut costs and improve outcomes… Is this a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE ?
