It is claimed that there are 10 million of these ESI’s are given annually. Both the FDA and the manufacturer of Methylprednisolone DO NOT RECOMMEND that this medication being administered as a ESI.
It is also claimed that abt 5% of pts getting these ESI’s will incur adhesive arachnoiditis .. which is an INCURABLE, VERY PAINFUL HEALTH CONDITION and it is caused by the needle/syringe is inserted ONE MM TOO FAR..
Anything injected into the spinal fluid must not only be sterile and pyrogen free – as all injectable medications must be… it must also be PRESERVATIVE FREE and a SOLUTION… methylprednisolone and that whole category of meds contain preservatives and is a SUSPENSION.
In the recent past CMS ( Medicare & Medicaid) was discussing/proposing to INCREASE what practitioners were paid for performing these ESI’s. I do not know if they ever finalized this propose increase. They want to ENCOURAGE practitioners to provide more of these ESI’s.

Because my neck injury is work related, work comp sent me to their own PMD and wouldn’t allow me to treat with my existing dr. They forced me into ESIs, would otherwise say I was a “non compliant” . The 2nd ESI caused me severe anxiety and 6 nights of insomnia, to which my blood pressure shot way up, (stress on heart/body from not sleeping for so many days) , and this dr. office said “mild irritant to have some insomnia’. Its amazing how they can force this torture on us, that does nothing to help the pain.
6 months later my pain is worse, and now surgery is being discussed.
Again The Drs some who are prescribing pain medicine will “force” these on you. And if you refuse, right away they think you dont want to try anything that might help you. And if your not going to try alternatives then they will threaten to take the pain medicine away.. Pretty stupid thinking. Why do we have to put ourselves through all this garbage, especially when your in your later years..The PAIN MEDICINE works for me,I dont need anything else!!!!
Not every doc is getting away with forcing ESI’s on pts in order to get oral opiates… .suggest you read this Doctor would not give individuals their pain medication … unless they capitulated in having an epidural
