State pharmacy boards back more FDA oversight
From the article:
The head of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy told Senate lawmakers that his group welcomes FDA action against pharmacies like the one that triggered a deadly meningitis outbreak last year. The group’s endorsement is a key step in bringing stricter oversight to the compounding industry, which has long operated in a gray area between state and federal regulation.
Since 2001, there have been 75 reported deaths and more than 1,020 illnesses connected with compounded drugs, according to an assessment released by the Pew Charitable Trusts at the hearing.
Gee… it is estimated that med errors in community pharmacies kills 25-30 pts A DAY and compounding has documented 75 deaths in 12 YEARS ? Where is the documentation of deaths from community pharmacy? Is that the next thing to come.. so that the FDA can finish their over-sight of pharmacy? Leaving the state BOP’s to perhaps overseeing just DEA violations? But why stop there.. just imagine how large and more powerful the DEA could get.. partnering up with the FDA to have complete over-sight of pharmacy operations , basically shuttering the states’ BOP’s.
Who is going to oppose this.. don’t count on the chains or the PBM industries.. they will gain the advantage of focusing all their lobbying efforts at one-two entities.. instead of having to deal with 51 BOP’s to get regulations passed or preventing regulation from being passed.
As Obamacare (ACA) is implemented… if this doesn’t lead to some sort of a “nationalize healthcare system”… it will be amazing… Bringing in the FDA/DEA to oversee medication/pharmacy portion of healthcare… would make sense – at least to bureaucrats …
One small step for pt safety… one giant leap for federal bureaucracies …
