The Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation has released its community pharmacy accreditation standards for public comment. CPPA is collaboration between the American Pharmacists Association and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy to create accreditation requirements for all community pharmacies.

The Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation (CPPA), a partnership between NABP and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), has been established to develop and implement comprehensive programs of pharmacy practice site accreditation. CPPA is responsible for developing, maintaining, and ensuring proper implementation of consensus-based accreditation standards for pharmacy practice sites, and the organization’s goal is to assist the public and profession by recognizing pharmacy practices that are committed to enhancing patient safety, quality of care, and access to pharmacists’ services, as noted in an APhA news release. APhA and NABP are equal representatives and share responsibility in the Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation. CPPA will contract with APhA to build on prior work by NABP and continue development of consensus-based standards for community pharmacy practice accreditation. CPPA will contract with NABP to administer the accreditation process. APhA has also announced that the organization will take public comment on aspects of standards during the Community Pharmacy Accreditation Open Forum to be held at the upcoming APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition in New Orleans, March 9-12, 2012.
It would appear that the notice was published TWO DAYS BEFORE … the OPEN COMMENT PERIOD was to happen... HOW CONVENIENT !

CPPA develops and implements comprehensive programs of pharmacy practice site accreditation, including the promotion, development and maintenance of principles, policies and standards. CPPA offers the general public and users of pharmacy services a means of identifying those pharmacies that satisfy the accreditation criteria and are focused on advancing patient care, safety and quality.
One has to wonder… criteria and are focused on advancing patient care, safety and quality… is this going to include reducing long shifts, under staffing and like issues that impact patient safety .. or just putting forward another set of metrics.. that on paper … things looks good.. but.. in reality it is all about data points on a spread sheet.
It is interesting.. here is the statement from NCPA…
Surveys of NCPA membership indicate that they are not in support of community pharmacy accreditation and NCPA does not support the latest accreditation efforts. NCPA will remain active in providing input to CPPA through formal comments and through grassroots efforts with its members. The period for public comment ends Aug. 15.

IMO.. it amazes me that someone can use so many words and not really say much without giving much details !
