The other night there was a special on CNN about the cruise ship sinking Concordia
Out of the 4000 odd people on the ship… 32 died.. of which two were Americans..
Two deaths of Americans was sufficient for Senator Nelson Rockefeller to convene a Senate committee meeting on the incident and cruise line industry safety.
In the CNN report .. it was suggested that the company and the Captain should be considered as “one and the same”.. in regards to responsibility of this accident.
A industry spokesperson stated that the modern day cruise ship are getting so large and complex .. that they are considering making the responsibility of operation of the ship spread over several properly trained staff.
Does this sound familiar … that the owner of the “ship” and the “captain” should be separate as far as the legal operation of the “ship”.. substitute “PIC” and “permit holder”??
Is Pharmacy divesting some of the responsibilities of operating the Rx dept.. since it has become so “large and complex”… but have we done this with properly trained staff?
It is estimated that community pharmacies kill 7,000 annually thru medication errors… that is TEN TIMES EVERY SINGLE DAY ….of what Americans were killed in the Concordia.
Of course, the deaths of people killed by the Rx dept mistakes are not quite as visible as a 1000′ cruise ship lying on its side in the water.
It would appear that some deaths have more political and media value than others….
Maybe that is why Senator Nelson has not called a Senate committee hearing on the safety of the healthcare industry…
