Knowledge is knowing the rules and clinical experience is knowing the exceptions to the rules

When a self-centered doctor is diagnosed with cancer, he becomes better able to empathize with his patients and appreciate a life outside his career.

A “war of words” somewhere else on the web jarred my memory about this movie from abt 20 yrs ago. There is a old saying and favorite one of mine…. Knowledge is knowing the rules and clinical experience is knowing the exceptions to the rules.

These words are exceptionally appropriate when dealing the pts dealing with chronic health issues and especially those involving subjective disease.

“Books Smarts” can not always be relied upon when dealing with certain segments of pts… those dealing with subjective diseases and those living with a number of complex/complicated health issues.

“back in the day” , I was one of those healthcare practitioners what totally relied on my “book smarts” and then I grew up and clinically matured

  1. I have noticed for a long time that many work hard at avoiding work. Gaining understanding is work, but many now simply offer an alibi and walk away, …congratulating themselves that they have successfully avoided work.

    • IT takes about TWICE as much time – by only the pharmacist – to do the administrative work around filling a C-II and I have been told that some of the major chain pharmacies have taken C-II out of the Pharmacist annual bonus calculation and have also reduced the Rx dept’s tech hours by the percentage of the Rxs of controls that are filled. Thus – if true – the Rx dept gets more tech help with the fewer controls that they fill.

      • Bret Baier did a piece tonight, same thing, ‘Opioid crisis worse’, and then pictures of pill bottles and a Mom of an overdoser and protesters saying ‘down with the Sacklers’. Only at the end did they show a boxfull of used hypos.

        • It has been reported that Oxycontin – made my Purdue Pharma – accounted for only 4% of all Opiate Rxs… I wonder how much intelligence it takes to figure out how many addicts was created by 4% of all opiate Rxs ?

  2. I told a so-called pain expert this exact thing, and he looked at me and said “I’m board certified in pain management!” I replied: “Until you’ve been through it, you have NO IDEA what I’m going through!”
I complained to the head of the clinic… Needless to say, that “expert” was dismissed the following week!
