David Bell died in the parking lot of Barnes-Jewish St. Peter’s (Mo.) Hospital during his third attempt to receive care, his wife told CBS affiliate KMOV.

Sadie Bell told KMOV she took her husband to the emergency room twice for severe chest pain the week of Jan. 8. Both times, hospital staff prescribed him ibuprofen but did not admit Mr. Bell, according to Ms. Bell. Mr. Bell, director for Central County Fire, was taken to the same hospital after having difficulty breathing at work for a third time.

When Ms. Bell arrived to Barnes-Jewish St. Peter’s Hospital, she said Mr. Bell was sitting outside in a wheelchair. She told KMOV that she asked the hospital to run tests and admit him, but they declined.

“He said, ‘Ma’am he’s already been here twice for the same thing and we’ve already diagnosed him,'” Ms. Bell told KMOV. She said her husband died before she could take him to another hospital.

Ms. Bell believes her husband was dismissed by physicians and staff, according to KMOV.

“Our thoughts are with the family after this loss, as well as with the entire Central County Fire & Rescue team,” a hospital spokesperson told Becker’s. “We cannot provide further comment due to patient privacy laws.”

  1. Well if this isnt a LAWSUIT I dont no what is..Its cases like this, that are happening frequently that the Drs an hospitals need to be held accountable. Maybe if a few of these were won in court, the idiots in charge will think differently..After all MONEY is all they care about! Would never had thought this could happen in the U.S. “THEY” want to turn us into a “3rd world country” and we all can see it being done!!

  2. Person claims to be in pain at ER…BLACK person claims to be in pain. Instant “drug seeker” diagnosis, shove ’em out the door & feel righteous for denying another addict. Anyone ever says the thing about US health care being the best in the world to me better duck. Fast.

    • I am not black and I get the same reaction. It is a god-complex and race does not matter. They feel superior (and PAs and NP are the very worse at this!) I even just had surgery and they treated me like I was searching out surgeries. I had a cyst. Tell me, who goes doctor shopping.. faking a cyst? Who would fake the need for surgery? I didn’t mention it- I wanted to know what the painful thing was on my finger. The doctor said he would operate and take it off.

      • I am not black either. Nor have I been able to get any pain help at an ER in years (heck, last time I went, I got chewed out for trying to get IV fluids b/c I was dangerously dehydrated…but I made the monumental mistake of mentioning that a very severe, long lasting migraine caused me to be dehydrated. they refused to believe I wasn’t “actually” seeking drugs, so refused the fluids. If that makes sense, explain it to me). However: race does matter in health care, or blacks & whites woudln’t have such wildly different health outcomes, even adjusting for socioeconomic status, education, diet, etc. And black pain patients have a harder time getting treatment, hard tho that may be to imagine at this point. I’m sure all races will be equal in getting pain treatment soon, since none of us will be able to get it at all; we’re nearly there already. I don’t have lots of references to back myself up & am too exhausted to get them, so don’t expect to be believed, & I know anecdotal evidence doesn’t count.
