This story has just begun… but.. that is little comfort to the now – at last count – 105 pts that have meningitis. The BOP met behind closed doors.. to discuss this issue…
and the pharmacy corporation has surrendered their license and shut down the operation.
This is just one of such type of pharmacy compounding operations that is going on in this country. Compounding is a very important option for a very small select population of patients and it would be a shame that this one incident would shutter all such operations.
IMO.. the state boards of pharmacy needs to “up their game” in the oversight of such operations that are providing such “high risk” products.
If the FULL TRUTH every sees the light of day – which I doubt – I would bet that there are a whole bunch of things that had to happen at the same time… like dominoes falling… that caused this tragedy … things like… one or more poorly trained staff…. someone taking a “short cut” to meet a push to get the job done..
It is interesting that the spokesperson for the BOP is James DeVita
I have been told that he is director of quality assurance and patient safety at CVS, also serves as executive committee member of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and has served on the NABP Task Force on Pharmacy Accreditation Standards.
That sure gives me the “warm fuzzies” since I don’t know how many CVS’ responses to medication errors in a number of states.. that I have read … that basically states that … CVS doesn’t understand why they – the permit holder – has any responsibility/liability for the medication error…
