PTSD – Pharmacist Traumatic Stress Disorder

Trauma doesn’t have to been a flash bulb moment.. like being shot.. being hit by a IED and similar traumatic moments. Trauma can be a low level on-going process

How many traumatic moments does the average RPH have in the typical day..

The daily call from your DM.. about not meeting one of the otherwise meaningless metrics

The pt that “goes off” because their Rx has no refills, is too early, copay went up, etc etc

You never know when/if one of these things is going to occur… so you are anxious about if/when it is going to happen.. because  you know it is coming… it is just a matter of time. Most likely, the cause of the trigger of this… you have no control over.. and by in larger .. you cannot placate the other end of the encounter. The stress of the encounter can quickly ramp up when a pt drags a non-RPH store manager .. who sides with the pt – and there are legalities involved.. and you must stand your ground. If уоu саn imagine whаt thе stress muѕt bе іn a situation оf wаr, thеn I assure, уоu саn imagine whаt chronic stress іѕ like. It requires medical help аnd proper treatment. Whether you are or not taking benzos and/or SSRI or similar.. if some/many of the symptoms below fits you… be honest – are you an impaired RPH?

If you continue to work while “impaired” could you be at risk of being guilty of  “unprofessional conduct”

If you are involved in a serious med errors, could your medical records be used against you or will the defense attorney insist that you have a mental evaluation that could be held against you?

The question has to be asked.. if your work environment is causing depression and anxiety.. and determined that you are “impaired” … does that make you eligible for workman’s comp claim, claim on your disability insurance policy, or even permanent Medicare/SS disability?

  1. Just read this, I’m just retired, and got terrible anxiety just going to work. I have been robbed at gunpoint twice, invaded once, screamed at a billion times. As soon as I retired, I started therapy only to find out I have ptsd and anxiety disorder. There was no support for professionals working. At least discreet help, so you could keep your job.i just thought I was getting older, etc,. Glad I’m out, but would love to educate future pharmacists to take care of their mental health! Cuz it’s brutal out there.

  2. I personally know pharmacists afraid to get the help they need because they do not want a mental health diagnosis on their chart. I believe the impaired pharmacist is not the pharmacist stabilized on a prescribed SSRI but rather the pharmacist who is silently suffering untreated.

  3. The question of whether worker’s compensation would pay for a stress disorder related to work is a good one! I have no idea if there are a lot of pharmacists suffering from a stress disorder due to their job. Personally, I don’t let many things at work bother me. But, I can retire any day, and the DM phoning me does not bother me at all.
