Pretty much everyone agrees that every “life” if precious. But our society seems to have problems with certain “quality of life” issues. Their is a growing movement toward making Naloxone (Narcan) readily available so those that intentionally or accidentally overdoses.. can be pulled back from “the brink” by their friends or those who happen to be around at the time. The new auto-injector comes in a TWIN-PAK.. I guess so if someone has really gone over the brink… to help make sure that they can be pulled back… and probably get to live to try the same stunt another day.
The question that maybe we should be asking.. Is a substance abuser’s “abuse/addiction” part of what our Founding Fathers meant by “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” ? I am sure that there were some back in the colonial days.. that were abusing some substance(s).
Does that same “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness”… perhaps refer to “quality of life”.. if so.. then these bureaucrats.. four states (WA, FL, OH, IN) that I know of have legislated what/how much morphine in mg/day that a prescriber can prescribe to a patient.. If so, are all these bureaucrats’ mandated dosing limits unconstitutional? Because they are interfering with a person’s quality of life.
Former New York Mayor Bloomberg tried to limit salt and the max size of soda that could be sold.. think that those nanny bureaucrats in NY were also the ones that started the calorie count on all fast food.. First of all I seldom look at those calorie counts.. but.. when I do.. it is usually… I didn’t know that they had that many calories.. hut .. that is what I want now.. and it tastes damn good..
I know that if some nanny bureaucrat came to me and said that – at this moment – I had to chose between giving up sodas or my gun.. I would probably shoot them with my gun and keep both.
I may not be addicted to sugar and caffeine ..but I really like my soda… But having to pry a soda can out of dead/cold hand.. is not that far off..
As a society, we , at least, tolerate alcoholics.. as long as they don’t get too drunk in public and/or drink/drive and damage property or kill someone. I have yet to hear about a liquor store telling a customer that think the person is abusing alcohol and refuse to sell it too them.. Now if they are “three sheets to the win” and the clerk knows that the person is driving.. then that is another issue about selling more alcohol.. but no one is even stopping them from selling it at that point.
Whether we are talking about chronic pain, mental health, ADD/ADHD… – or any other chronic disease for that matter – is quantity of life.. with no/limited/restricted quality of life. Is that what we would want for ourselves or someone that we love ?
What if it was someone who couldn’t walk – young or old – should we provide them with a wheel chair ? So we provide them a manual wheel chair.. but.. they don’t have the upper body strength to manage the wheel chair on their own.. should be just tell them to “suck it up”.. “get over it”… you just need to exercise more.. so that you can better use the wheel chair? Or do we give them a electric wheel chair. so that they can be at least more independent ?
