Pharmacies deny consumers pain prescriptions
Consumers say they feel like criminals being forced to ‘pharmacy shop’

DEA Agent Jeff Walsh says legitimate prescriptions should be filled by pharmacist. “DEA does not or ever will tell a pharmacist you can or cannot fill a prescription. The message I’d like to get out is the pharmacy owners and the pharmacist…just use the information that you have and make it an appropriate decision. If it’s a legitimate script these people should have access to it,” he said.

Local 6 asked the president of Florida’s Pharmacist Association Michael Jackson, why people are having such a tough time getting their prescriptions filled?  Jackson said he believes that problem stems from the “pill mills” and pain clinics.

“The pendulum has swung in my opinion way too far to the right. We have got to find a way to bring it back to the center so we can balance the needs of the patient,” he said. Instead, those needs are instead being questioned by pharmacists; who are also under scrutiny by the DEA.

That is what I all over town that they won’t fill scripts from any pain clinic in my area. Walgreens, Walmart, CVS and the small town ones. Or they just don’t have them for new patients. This is out of control for legit people that have all the documentation they need for proof of disability.

  3. The DEA Knows exactly what they are doing, they never tell pharmacist who to fill, they just scare the pharmacist bad enough and tell him he will close the pharmacy and send the pharmacist to jail, if he fills a bad prescription. So then the DEA Agent just comes into the pharmacy and says ” I would like to see Dr Jone’s prescriptions he has been writing lately. and then the DEA agent leaves and the terrified Pharmacist says to his staff “don’t fill Dr Jone’s Scripts, he is being watched by DEA!! This is all part of the agents plan and now that pharmacy does not fill Dr. Jone’s PATIENTS SCRIPTS

    • If I remember correctly IN indiana they have to have a subpoena to do that and I have to have the authoriztion from the pharmacy owner attorney to hand over any of that info. But as long as I have documented the scripts meet the legal criteria I filled them. The docs we filled that eventually were busted were dispensing large amounts of narcotics directly from their offices not because of the scripts they were writing. Thats how many of the abusers were getting the drugs…no paper trail.

  4. Either someone isnt being honest or the reporters arent being agressive enough to press the issues with further questions. …how come no one has pressed then BOP president for a statement and going after “jail them all” Bondi for a statement??? Seems by now the ‘pill mill’ problem should be resolved after all this time. Keep up the very public squeaky wheel FL pain community!!!

  5. Does the DEA really think that this simple statement will make a difference? This agency created the problem, and it’s way too late to put the genie back in the bottle.

  6. This sounds like what I’ve heard for months. I have a script for 3 wks now, unable to fill it anywhere. I have 1 long acting pill left, & some of the short acting med, that no one will fill for me. I suppose I’ll be in w/d, & living in hell if I don’t wean down off of my pain medication. The thought of going through that is almost unbearable. I’m alone, a legitimate pain patient, who followed all the rules. I’m scared, angry & sad. No one understands, I’ve contacted my insurance, my state representative, & senator. They all say the same thing. It’s the DEA, a federal entity. They’ve made my life a nightmare, & are playing God with people’s lives. They’ve stolen my basic right for pain relief. I don’t get social security, so I doubt the ADA would cover someone like me. I look to the future with fear & apprehension. I have no rights, I feel very alone in my life right now. -A CPP

    • You are not alone, you know. There are thousands of other pain patients in your same predicament. And you don’t have to be on Social Security to be protected by the ADA.

I wish I could help, I really do. The only advice I have is that if the withdrawal becomes unmanageable, you may want to seek out help through a doctor that treats addiction. Drugs like buprenorphine are a lot easier to gain access to than the ones you are used to.
