“The moral test of a government is how it treats those who are at the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadow of life, the sick and the needy, and the handicapped.” – Hubert Humphrey

“…with promises for a pain-free future.”
These media people really crack me up — they’re allowed to say anything. (I wonder, did ABC get permission from the FDA to make a pain-free claim for this device?) And the doctor’s demonstration reminds me of the infomercials on late-night cable TV for magnetic bracelets.
While you can always find a handful of patients who are helped by any treatment (including placebos), the real story is in the percentage of patients who paid for treatment that did absolutely nothing (or made the pain worse).
Many pain patients have already done exactly what they’re suggesting — learning about their pain and how to control it. And many pain patients aren’t able to control their conditions without help, just like patients who take heart medication (along with using other alternative treatments).
The TV doctor says, “We’re not sure exactly what leads to chronic pain, but one big theory… from the 80s…” As if what we’ve learned about the brain since then doesn’t even apply.
Claiming those who deal with injury in a positive way don’t develop chronic pain — what hogwash. Those who develop chronic pain “avoid this fear, they avoid the confrontation…” Also a bunch of hogwash. Sure, maybe that happens for some patients, but it’s not science.
