Fibromyalgia Mystery Finally Solved!

http://guardianlv.com/2013/06/fibromyalgia-mystery-finally-solved/

from the article:

To solve the Fibromyalgia mystery, researchers zeroed in on the skin from the hand of one patient who had a lack of the sensory nerve fibers, causing a reduced reaction to pain. They then took skin samples from the hands of Fibromyalgia patients and were surprised to find an extremely excessive amount of a particular type of nerve fiber called arteriole-venule (AV) shunts.

Up until this point scientists had thought that these fibers were only responsible for regulating blood flow, and did not play any role in pain sensation, but now they’ve discovered that there is a direct link between these nerves and the widespread body pain that Fibromyalgia sufferers feel.

It was first referred to as “whining woman’s disease”

Then once it was given a name a sizable number of prescribers believed it was “all in the head”

Once it was proved to be a disease state.. skeptics claim that opiates do not work for the pain of Fibromyalgia ( FM)

Wonder what they will claim now to debunk a growing evidence of scientific evidence ?

  1. I’m on a combo of Tramadol and Norco, and I can tell you that without the Norco I’m pretty much useless…and with just the Norco I’m pretty much useless.

My guess is the two, in combination, work on different receptors and in my case leave me not pain free, but at least functional and productive.

When my doc first scoffed at the effects of opiods on my fibro, I asked him how he knew it wasn’t going to work if no one really has a clue just what fibro is in the first place. It took me a year of excruciating pain to convince him to add the Norco. In the first month I noticed a huge difference, and now he’s a believer.

    • Good for you Awesome for hanging in there to prove your condition to your doctor. I know that must have been a real effort on your part. It is just impossible these days to get most doctors to recognize real pain when they see it anymore because of the DEA breathing down their back and creating the fear that they will loose their license if they write a simple prescription that actually helps. It is so frustrating to me. We, the people in pain are really suffering because of this failed and so called “War on Drugs” which has obviously failed. The expression “War on Drugs” has become a meaningless cliche to me anymore. A lot of people are suffering needlessly — me included. I’m so tired of it. And to Wendy — I am so sorry you are suffering. I have had almost the exact experience you have had and I spend most of my time in terrible and very treatable pain. I have orthopedic issues. Some of the treatments these ortho docs are wanting to use are nothing less than torture techniques to me. I just say No Thank you. I don’t want to aggravate my pain. I want to help it so that I can lead a productive life. Plain and Simple.

  2. I have fibromyalgia! I was lucky enough to have a young women doctor in the mid 80s know about it and diagnose me. I have been on vicodin, morphine, percocet, fentanyl, or a combination of two for many years. About 5 years ago is when I started hearing that the opioids don’t work. I still wonder why they are telling me they don’t work. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? I do much better on them than off. Without them my quality of life is cut to nothing and what gives anyone the right to take away the quality of my life. I would love to hear that there is a new test for fibro. Will this finding lead to this?
