A few weeks ago .. I saw a post on the Linkedin account for the parochial high school that I attended.. “… is looking for alumni willing to share their story of how they chose their career with our freshmen. ” Well first of all I still can’t explain how I ended up being a Pharmacist.. I started out as a chemistry major and for my entire life, we went to this “country doc” that was a dispenser. He ran a real one-man practice … no receptionist, no nurse, no appts… the practice started and stopped with him… My exposure/interaction with a pharmacy/Pharmacist was virtually non-existent .. but I digress…
There are some 200 K – 300 K of us… how many of those numbers would recommend that someone go into pharmacy… as it exists today?
what would happen if a large number of those pharmacists who would not recommend the profession to someone in high school … would go back to their alma mater and/or if they are no longer in that area… go to a local high school and talk to the school’s guidance counselor… sharing the truth about the pharmacy profession… surplus of Pharmacists, falling salaries, 14 hr work days without any breaks… and on and on… no exaggeration necessary .. the truth is scary is enough for the “uninformed”.
Collectively, could we put a dent into the number of applicants to the 120 pharmacy schools ?
Once these “pharmacist dreamers” get to the “academic lion’s den” it is too late… I can remember being told over 40 yrs ago… one day .. the doctor will diagnose and you – as the drug expert – will be doing the prescribing… How many of you have gotten your ears “verbally beaten” when you tried to suggest to a prescriber that the pt’s medication therapy may not be in the pt’s best interest?
I’m just saying …

Steve,
My high school chemistry teacher directed me towards a pharmacy degree. Better add them to the list of people to speak with. My job is so bad even the technicians don’t wish they had gone on to pharmacy school.
