Woman shoots herself in back to alleviate pain

ROBINSON, TX (KXXV) –

A woman was taken to the hospital Friday morning after a shooting in Robinson.

Robinson police were on the scene in the 600 block of Karnes Drive in Robinson. Police said that a 76-year-old woman had shot herself in the back after experiencing chronic pain that she could no longer tolerate.

The woman was found in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the right hip. She told officers that she hoped that now she could experience relief from the back pain.

  1. This is pathetic. The morons creating this witch hunt should be shot themselves!!![sorry,Jesus[but I’m mad!!!They are claiming 50,000 daily O.D.’ing,well,there are 378,000 dying nationwide EVERY DAY from second hand smoke. One every 13 seconds. However, this does not seem to affect the control of tobacco, nor is it considered an ‘epidemic’How very curious and staggeringly hypocritical. What purpose does tobacco serve other than to flat out KILL?WTF,WTF,WTF?Floridians, start rampaging Bill Nelson and Mario Rubio, our lovely “SIN”ators on the phone.Get their blockhead attention!!!Their phone #’s can be had thru 411 or White House swtchboard.ThaNK yOU!!

    • Andrew; I too used to feel bad about wishing dreadfully painful things on other people….not any more. Amazing how being the target of a sadistic, willfully ignorant campaign of deliberate torture can lower one’s moral & ethical standards. Or not amazing.

And it also get crazy-mad when I think about the whole thing with tobacco, & alcohol as well. You’re right in that there’s no actual positive benefit inherent in either (no matter how much people may like/want them). Both substances addict, kill, & destroy FAR more lives than pain medications ever have –heck, more than all opioids legal AND illegal– but no hysteria over them. And pain meds are the only substances in the group that have real, constructive effects, allowing people to function, work, have some quality of life. The others are destructive, not constructive (well, very light drinking *may* have some benefits, but not even in the same universe of beneficial as pain medications).

“Staggeringly hypocritical” is a good phrase, tho even that seems an understatement…I don’t think language is capable of truly describing the degree of insanity of this whole situation.

      • I so agree, the roads are deadly with the inebriated and then there’s tobacco, of course… lot’s to do with money- the legality, don’t know it,s insanity- I don’t stumble or stink when on my meds, I can gently get up and move around hurting anyone.

    • The poor woman must go to the same pain clinic that I do. They are cutting us back on pain meds so fast we are experiencing terrible pain and withdrawal symptoms. They don’t care! People will go to the streets and they will be more suicide.

  2. This poor womwn 76 years old, i dont think she was actually thinking she would get care from these barbaric Drs, but rather, maybe remove the pain by removing her hip, its a tragic and unforgivable harm inflicted by our gov.

  3. If she was admitted to the hospital. She might be prescribed mild opiates. Her actions, will not increase her chances of having her chronic pain treated with opiates. She will be referred for mental health services. More, than likely also referred to an addiction program.

    • Just curious ,”Hope,” why a addiction program??maryw

      • mary w, First, no one knows, the particulars on this or any situation they read or hear about. How many doctors had,the woman seen to try and obtain treatment? What medications had she been on, the dosage, for what conditions ?. What other medications was she on ?

The woman was not trying to kill herself. She,was, trying to cause herself injury in order to obtain opiates. This is a red flag for opiate addiction. You would not believe the things people do to themselves. to try and obtain opiates. Causing yourself more pain does not help the original pain. It only adds to it.

If this method worked well for getting opioids. Emergency departments and hospital would be filled with drug addicts trying to obtain opioids.

        • It is not clear that she injured herself to obtain opiates, & there’s no evidence that she was taking opiates in the first place; they just said she was a chronic pain sufferer. She was quoted as saying that she hoped it would take care of the pain. Sounds to me like she might have been hoping, on some level, to blow out (literally) the source of the agony. I know of people who desperately wished they could cut off their hands to escape savage arthritis or nerve pain. During the first attack of a mysterious something never diagnosed, I spent nearly a week wishing those swollen wads of unspeakable agony on the ends of my wrists were gone. I’ve had 10+ migraines when the idea of drilling a hole in my head to let the pain out seems almost like a reasonable idea, & I’ve literally banged my head against the wall; for a brief period after the blow, it did feel fractionally better in comparison.

I’m not saying these actions are reasonable or make sense. Excruciating pain can scramble the thinking processes. Horses with terrible colic pain will sometimes bite & kick at their own stomachs. Humans are supposed to be more reasonable than that, but it really is possible to be “out of your mind with pain.” I would guess that you have not experienced such excruciating pain that insanely extreme possibilities start to seem not unreasonable.

Since you yourself admit that “no one knows the particulars on this or any situation they read or hear about,” I think it’s telling that you instantly leapt to the conclusion that she’s a crazed drug addict willing to maim herself for a fix….it tells a great deal about your own bias; you leap to the most malign interpretation of her actions based upon no supporting evidence. Without knowing any particulars, you heard “chronic pain” & instantly convicted her of being such a drug crazed addict that she’d shoot herself to get a fix.

She probably does need mental health help. But there is no evidence in the story (or elsewhere that I could find) to justify the assertion that she is a drug addict. At 76, she may have dementia that could lead to thinking she could “blast out” the pain source. She may’ve thought there was a demon living in her hip & wanted to blast it out. She may have been hoping for drugs. As you said, we don’t know…but you seem to be certain your conclusion is the only possibly one despite a complete lack of evidence to back it up.

  4. What’s even more tragic is that I very seriously doubt that the ER gave her anything beyond otc ibuprofen or tylenol for the gunshot wound.

And I’m sure that the anti-opioid zealots will spin it as “proof” that she’s dangerously addicted –“Look, these addicts are so desperate for their fix that they’ll shoot themselves!”

  5. We are going to see more and more stories like this as doctor’s stop prescribing much needed pain medication, and as insurance companies refuse to cover them.

    • Unfortunately you are to right. Humans can be left to struggle because idiots decided they needed a high for whatever reason and like our government is prone to do is throw the baby out with the water, it’s so very sad.
