The abuse of prescription drugs has led to a significant increase in emergency department (ED) visits and drug-related deaths over the past decade. Opioid pain relievers (OPRs) and benzodiazepines are the prescription drugs most commonly involved in these events (1,2). Excessive alcohol consumption also accounts for a significant health burden and is common among groups that report high rates of prescription drug abuse (1,3,4)
Imagine that… people who abuse controlled meds… ALSO abuse alcohol … a little fact that seems to be left out of published stats… about ER visits caused by substance abuse… ALCOHOL is consider a DRUG.. just not a controlled drug or a opiate.. I know that must have been a oversight by those issuing press releases supporting the war on drugs.
